Simple Initial Ornaments
I guess I'm getting a late start on the holidays this year! Anywho, I saw these Anthropologie letter ornaments and wanted to put my own spin on them. I really like theirs, but for my tree, I need simpler, more traditional colors. So white and red it is!
Very easy to make! Now I need to go and make initials for everyone else... So here's how to make some yourself:
The first thing you'll need are letters to trace. You can freehand the letters yourself, use stencils or your fancy Cricut or Silhouette, or you can use a word processor to type the letters you need, enlarge them, and print them up. That's the route I chose. Once you've got your letters,
cut them out and trace onto your fabric. I used a white snowflake fabric for the front and a piece of red for the back. This really doesn't use a lot of fabric at all- a fat quarter will make a LOT of ornaments. This is my pretty fat quarter of snowflake fabric I bought at Jo-Ann's for $1.29-
Flip your letter over so that it's backwards, and trace it onto the backside of one of your fabrics. Cut it out and pin onto your second piece of fabric. Don't forget to sandwich a piece of string in the middle for your hanger!
I used my sewing machine to sew around the outline of my letter (because my hand sewing is not very nice...bleh). If you use your machine, just make sure to go slow. To get around corners of curves easier, lift the presser foot and pivot your fabric when the needle is down. That way the needle stays where it needs to in the fabric, but you can change the direction of your sewing.
Make sure to leave an opening so that you can turn the letter right-side out.
I used a pencil to help push all of the corners out. This is the trickiest step. The smaller the letter, the harder to turn it right-side out. My letter is about 2.5 inches in height.
Using little bits at a time, fluff your letter up with stuffing/fiberfill. Again, a pencil or something like it helps to get the fill into the corners.
Once it's stuffed, hand stitch the opening, and it's finished! A cute little initial for your tree!

The H is for my oldest daughter, Hannah. One letter down, four to go :)
These would be really cute made with felt and then blanket stitched... maybe I'll try that sometime.
