Cinnamon Stick Ornament
Of all scents out there, cinnamon has got to be my favorite. Or at least in the top 3. I knew I wanted to make some sort of ornament with cinnamon sticks, and this is what I came up with:
To cut the cinnamon sticks, I used a serrated knife. Carfeully (don't hurt yourself, now) cut into the stick. You most likely won't cut all the way through it, unless you are extremely stronger than I am. What I did was score around the stick where I wanted the cut,
used my thumb for pressure against the score line, and snapped it. Some sticks are thicker than others and require a deeper cut. Just be careful!
It will take quite a few cinnamon sticks to cover the ball, depending on how long you make your pieces. For my 2-ish inch pieces, I needed two packs of cinnamon sticks.
To make the ornament, start by painting the ball brown, if you would like. Parts of the styrofoam will show, so it's up to you what color it is.
Glue the string to what will be the top of the ornament. Hold the string in place with extra glue and a cinnamon stick piece. Now you can start the glue, stick, hold procedure. Squeeze some glue, put a cinnamon stick on the glue, and hold.
Repeat until the entire ball is covered. There's no real rhyme or reason to placement, just put them where they fit. When it's covered, you're finished! And your house smells like cinnamon! A win-win!
It... smells.... AWESOME! How can you go wrong with cinnamon sticks, anyway? Here's what you need to make one:
- cinnamon sticks (I got a package of them from Yankee Dollar in the floral section for- yep- a dollar)
- a styrofoam ball
- piece of string
- serrated knife
- hot glue gun & glue sticks
- brown paint for styrofoam ball (optional)
