It's A Watermelon Ring!
I've been experimenting some more with the plastic from 2-liter bottles, and this is one of the ideas I came up with. I think it's cute, and perfect for summer!

It's really pretty simple to make, and you only need a few things.

Once you've got your strip cut, take your pin and poke a line of holes down the middle. Again, you don't need perfect spacing. Don't pick on my 'straight' line.

Now take your pin again and poke a hole above and between every other hole in the line down the middle. Hmmmm, I think I just confused myself. Good thing I took a picture! Sorry, it could have been a little more in focus, but hopefully you get the idea. These holes make the "seeds".

Now thread your pink thread onto the needle, double it up, and tie a knot at the end. Make sure it's a pretty long piece. Pull your needle through a hole on the end, and pull tight. Take your needle and coming from the same side as before (what will be the inside of the ring, or the back) skip a hole and pull the needle through, pulling tight. Make sure that the 'V' is on the same side as your holes for the 'seeds', or you'll have seeds in the rind! :) Once you've got your 'V', come again from the back (always from the same side) and pull the needle through the hole that you've skipped. Repeat over and over, until you've gone the full length. Tie off the thread and trim the excess.
I hope the pictures help if I wasn't clear enough!

Repeat for the other side with the green thread.

To make the little seeds, use the black thread, and starting from a middle hole (where the pink & green threads meet) pull the needle from the back up through and down through one of the holes up above. Do it a time or two more, until the seed looks full enough to you. Tie the thread off in the back, and repeat.

When the seeds are done, it's time to close the ring. Using green or pink thread (whichever you choose) knot the thread and pull through an end hole. Take the needle and pull it through the top of the hole on the other end, and pull tight. This should bring the ends together, and give the ring its shape. Need a picture? Yeah, I thought so. Hope this helps:

Last step! Wrap the thread around to secure and cover up the ends, and then tie and trim. It's done!

Wear it!

OR (I like this) wear TWO! I think it looks more watermelon-y this way.

Cute, right? I think it's so fun. I might try a kiwi-style ring next. Hmmmm.

- plastic from a 2-liter bottle
- pink, green, and black sewing thread (embroidery thread may be too thick)
- scissors, a pin & a hand sewing needle
