Love Necklace Tutorial : Junk Drawer Challenge

For my first installment of my 'Junk Drawer Challenge', I made this Valentine's Day-inspired necklace:

...from these items (plus some white tee fabric):

You will need-
  • a bracing bracket?  Some kind of flat bracket... just make sure it's got a couple of holes for your cord.
  • baker's/craft twine in red and white
  • a scrap piece of white cotton
  • three strips of white tee fabric, about 22' x 1/4"
  • Mod Podge & a small paint brush
  • needle and white thread
Here's what you do:

Start by tracing the bracket onto the scrap cotton. Use a pen, a marker, crayon, whatever- you won't see the marks, so use anything.

Cut it out on the inside of your pen marks, and scrunch the fabric into a ball.  Really play with it so that the edges begin to fray, like this-

Brush a coat of Mod Podge onto the bracket and press the fabric onto it.

Now for the letters; this is the trickiest part.  Cut your twine and shape it into your letters.  I got the twine to stay in place temporarily with a couple of pins.  Using your small paint brush, add some Mod Podge under the twine onto the fabric, and press the twine down into place.  Hold the twine in place for a few seconds, and it will stick.

Repeat this process with the other letters.  When all of your letters are in place, brush the entire thing with a coat of Mod Podge to keep everything in place.

While you're waiting for the podge to dry, take your three strips of tee and braid them up.

From this:

To this:

Once the Mod Podge has dried, take a seam ripper/craft knife/sharp implement, and cut through the fabric where the holes in the bracket are.

Push the ends of your braided fabric through the holes.  An easy way to do this is to push one strip end through and pull- the rest will follow through.

Please excuse my extremely dry hands.  This time of year, it's impossible for my hands to look moisturized.  They look like this even after using lotion.  Multiple times.  Oh well.

Once you've got the braid through the holes, fold the fabric under and hand sew in place.  You could probably hot glue it, too....hmmm....

And there you have it- a cute little necklace!  I think I may try one in different colors with the word 'Kiss' next...

What will be my next project?  Come back and see!

I Challenge Myself...

Alright, so here's what's going on.  Last week I went to my local hardware store and puttered around for a while.  I'm pretty sure I looked like an idiot when the guys working there asked; "Can I help you find something?  What are you looking for?" and I would reply; "I have no idea what I'm looking for, I'll know it when I see it".  Hmmm.  Anyway, I walked away with these things:

And it cost me about $6.
What I've challenged myself to do is take these things, along with a handful of stuff from my junk drawer... well, one of them, anyway... and create.  Good old-fashioned brain storm and come up with something.  I've got a few ideas going already- thinking about them actually was keeping me up last night.  I have appropriately named this challenge the

Junk Drawer Challenge!

Clean out your junk drawers and make something!  If you don't have junk drawers, well, I envy you.  You junk-drawer-less people can just go to the hardware store, then.

So check back tomorrow; I'll have the first of my projects ready to go.  I can't wait!  See you then!

Easy No-Sew Patches

Hey there!  Today's tutorial is a pretty simple one- no-sew patches.  Not the most exciting, but I did put my own little twist on them.

My oldest daughter, Hannah, has a pair of khakis that have seen better days.  Sparkly fabric paint and some hot chocolate stains on the leg made them look a little gross.  So I grabbed a pair of jersey knit pants, that had also seen their final days, cut 'em up, and made some pink patches for my pink princess.
Super easy.  And see the curled-up edges?  I love that!  Want to make some?  Here's what you need:

Oh, and a dirty pair of pants/other clothing you want to save:

The first thing you're going to do is take your fabric and iron the freezer paper to the front of it.  Shiny side down, folks.  I find this makes it soooooo much easier to trace and cut shapes from stretchy fabric.  Big time easier.
Then trace your shapes onto your fabric.

I used cookie cutters for tracing.  Easy!

Once you've got your shapes, cut them out, but cut bigger than the shape.  This is where the curl comes from.  And the more excess, the more curl. (I wish I had left more on my shapes).

Now trace your shapes onto the Heat N' Bond, and cut them out- actual size.  Once they're cut, iron them onto your fabric shapes, still keeping the freezer paper on the front of your fabric.

Peel off the paper from the Heat N' Bond, place the patches where you want them, and iron. When they're cooled off, you can finally peel that freezer paper off.

I threw the pants right into the washer and dryer when I was finished, and they came out with pretty curled-up edges.

See? That was pretty easy!  There are so many ways to really make some cool patches- I'm going to try layering fabrics next time.

Color Personalities

I love quizzes.  They're so much fun.  Especially ones that pertain to decorating, or fashion, or... anything.  Over at Better Homes & Gardens they've got a fun little quiz about color personalities.  It's fun, it doesn't take long, and it was pretty accurate for me.  I got:

Yep, pretty much.  I do love me some green.  And some nature.

Well, just a quick little post to let you know about a fun little quiz that you can check out right.... here.  Leave me a comment to let me know your color!  I've got a tutorial almost ready to go for tomorrow, and a sneak peek at what I've challenged myself to do in the next week.  Later!
